03 June, Nepal recorded a record win over home team Scotland in the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 after Karan KC scored his first half-century in his ODI career with a brilliant batting display.
Nepal defeated Scotland by 1 wicket in the first match of the League 2 series after Karan, batting at number nine, scored an unbeaten 65. Chasing the target of 297 runs set by Scotland, Nepal achieved it with the loss of 9 wickets with the last ball remaining. Karan scored an unbeaten 65 runs off 41 balls, with the help of 3 fours and 4 sixes. He was also declared the Man of the Match.
Nepal has set a record by chasing the highest target in One Day International cricket. The previous record was the highest run chase by Nepal, when they chased down a target of 287 runs against Canada.
With 192 for 7, Karan and Gulshan Jha shared a crucial 60-run partnership for the eighth wicket. Gulshan contributed 42 runs in 30 balls, with the help of 3 fours and 3 sixes.
Nepal needed 68 runs in the last 6 overs and only 3 wickets were left. Nepal added 16 runs when Gulshan Jha hit 2 sixes in the 45th over. Nepal added 9 runs in the 46th over. But after Gulshan was dismissed, Nepal needed 43 runs in 4 overs.
In the next over, Safiya Sharif gave away just 5 runs, leaving Nepal at 159-8 with 38 runs needed in the last 3 overs. Karan added 13 runs with Sandeep Lamichhane in the 48th over, including a six, to require 25 runs in the last 2 overs.
In the 49th over, Safiya Sharif hit a six and two fours to add a total of 18 runs in that over, leaving Nepal needing only 7 runs in the final over.
After Sandeep Lamichhane was caught out on the first ball of the last over, Rin Dhakal bowled a wide and a dot, taking one run and giving strike to Karan. Karan added 2 runs each off the next 2 balls, leaving 1 run needed off the last ball.
Earlier, opener Kushal Bhurtel scored 53 runs for Nepal. Gulshan Jha scored 42, Bhim Sarki scored 40, and captain Rohit Poudel scored 37 runs.
Scotland's Brandon McMullen took 3 wickets for 47 runs in 10 overs. Jack Jarvis and Michael Leask took 2 wickets each, while Jasper Davidson and Mark Watt took 1 wicket each.
Earlier in Dundee, after Nepal won the toss and elected to bowl, Scotland, who batted first, scored 296 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 50 overs, setting Nepal a target of 297 runs.
Opener Charlie Tear top-scored for Scotland with 80 runs. Tear hit 12 fours and 1 six in 72 balls. Similarly, Finlay McCreary scored 55, captain Richie Barrington scored 40 and Matthew Cross scored 39 runs.
For Nepal, Karan KC took 2 wickets for 43 runs in 10 overs, including 1 maiden. Similarly, Sompal Kami took 66 runs in 10 overs and Region Dhakal took 2 wickets each for 78 runs in 10 overs. Sandeep Lamichhane took 1 wicket.
After this win, Nepal has climbed to seventh place in the points table with 8 points from 13 matches. Scotland is in fourth place with 20 points from 17 matches.
